August 2002

Greetings,

This has been a wonderful month for the Free Wheelchair Mission. Here are some highlights:
  • We produced a strategic plan, and fine tuned our Vision, Mission and Value statements. Our vision is to provide 20 million wheelchairs this decade!
  • We had our first Roll Out Dinner. These dinners will be our way of telling our story to 20 or so people, and interest them in supporting our mission. We plan to have these about every month.
  • We ordered a container for Zhengzhou, the capital of the Henan Province in China. Father Winner has distributed about 100 of his 550 wheelchairs in Chennai. They are going fast! Jose Neto continues to transport his wheelchairs into the interior of Angola, where the devastations of 25 years of civil war are extreme.
  • The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara transported 150 wheelchairs to Zacatecas, Mexico. We have wheelchairs in India, Angola, Mexico, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Estonia, Brazil, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

A STORY FROM INDRA IN CHENNAI, INDIA Photo of Indra

Indra is a polio victim. She was abandoned by her family, and lives in an orphanage for mentally retarded children. She is not mentally retarded, but languished in that orphanage.

She was not learning, and was not interested in school.

" It's me Indra!" "

I am thinking to write to you everyday to express my sincere thanks for the great gift which you have given me couple of years ago. The wheelchair made a world of difference in my life; it made my life so easy and more mobile. It was difficult for others to carry me if I have to go out. Now it is easy for me to go out on my own. I go to the typing institute, for the special tuition class, to meet my friends on the wheelchair."

" The school where I am studying has never had a student in a wheelchair. The school department is so kind hearted towards me; they have shifted the class from the second floor to the ground floor for my sake. When necessary, my companions carry me in my wheelchair to the laboratory on the second floor. Thank God, the wheelchair is very strong, and it bears with me."

" Thank you very much for the precious gift (wheelchair) which reminds me of your special love and concern for handicap children like me. I will always remember you."

" Lovingly, your beneficiary, Indra"

THE WHEELCHAIR CHANGED HER LIFE - FOREVER!

OUR CHALLENGE

We have an opportunity to ship a container of wheelchairs to Afghanistan. I don’t have to tell anyone about the need they have for wheelchairs. You can all read about stories where promises for aid are not being met. You can help change the way the world responds to the needs of our fellow man.

Our second challenge is to bring another container home here to the USA. Our warehouse is about empty. So many organizations want to get involved, but they are not ready to start with a full container.

Your gifts and prayers are needed now. Please invite your family and friends to join you in praying and giving toward a container for Afghanistan or for our friends in the USA.

$278 for 10 wheelchairs

$556 for 20 wheelchairs

$1,112 for 40 wheelchairs

$5,560 for 200 wheelchairs

$15,290 for 550 - a complete container

Free Wheelchair Mission now has IRS tax-exempt status, so you can send you donations directly to the address below. Thank you in advance for whatever you can give.

God bless,
