Greetings and Happy Friday!

October 15, 2004

This story comes from Scaria in Kerala, India. He picked the title, "Beauty to the World."

The dictionary meanings of the word “beauty” are 1) a combination of qualities that delights the senses, 2) a beautiful woman and 3) an attractive feature or advantage. Yes, the wheelchair project adds beauty to this world.

While driving to the office one Rotarian noticed a young lady crawling on the road, begging for money. Traffic prevented him from stopping his car, and this lady disappeared in the crowd. He told some rickshaw drivers that if they find her, tell her that she can get a wheelchair.

This happened in the morning. By noon rickshaw driver Ayoob brought her to my office. A huge crowd gathered around her and was joined by other drivers from the nearby taxi stand. This lady had a rubber sole cut from a truck tyre tube tied around her bottom and she crawled around with her hands. She had cut rubber slippers and put them on her hands to protect them from the rough ground. We gave a wheelchair to her. Her name is Lekshmi Devi (Lekshmi Devi is the name of Goddess for Prosperity). Her parents are beggars and she was disabled since birth. We had a problem communicating with her as her mother tongue was Telugu which is a different dialect. But all of us could see her feelings, just looking at her eyes.

My dear friends, when I said the wheelchair project adds beauty to the world, it is a truth. See the pictures of how it transforms this lady and makes her more beautiful. Fellow auto drives joined Ayoob to place the wheelchair on the top of his rickshaw, and he drove her to the railway station where her parents were sitting.

Sense of service is one of the qualities a human being must have.

May God Bless you all,

Scaria
