Greetings and Happy Friday!

September 17, 2004

Last month we were on a mission trip in Peru. We gave away 50 wheelchairs in Cusco, a city high in the Andes. The next day we had a three hour drive to a small town called Sicuani. Eight of us traveled in a van with Pastor Robert, our host from Lima. About half way to Sicuani, in the middle of nowhere, there was a road block. Our first reaction was typical American: fear. Was it terrorist involvement, a kidnapping, a holdup? Then we saw people holding banners with the words "Gracias" and "Free Wheelchair Mission".

We were at a cross-road. There was a tiny village of about 100 people. The major introduced himself, and lead us to a man sitting in one of our wheelchairs. We recognized Juan Carlos from the day before in Cusco. Juan heard that we were traveling to Sicuani that day, and he told his mayor. The whole town had been stopping cars all morning, hoping to intercept us, hoping just to be able to thank us.
