Greetings and Happy Friday!

February 20, 2004

Susan Shaw and a small team were recently in Fiji, helping to distribute wheelchairs we sent them for Christmas. These wheelchairs went to a more remote area part of the main Fijian island Viti Levu.

One day the team made a wrong turn and got quite lost in the bush. They saw an old man sitting in the shade under a mango tree, so they stopped to ask directions. They had to dodge the ripe mangos falling from the tree, loosened by the ocean breeze. His name is Prem Kumar, and he showed them where they were on the map. He seemed to be out in the middle of nowhere, so they asked him what he was doing under that tree. Prem said his family carries him from the house each morning, and carries him back in the evening, as he has no use of his legs. And there he sits, all day.

Susan got a wheelchair out of the truck. They lifted him into it, took some photos, and drove down the dirt path.

Prem in his new wheelchair
We are all wondering what that conversation was like when Prem's family returned that evening, and he told them about the foreigners that stopped, asked for directions, dropped off a wheelchair, prayed for him and drove away. Or perhaps Prem rolled himself back that afternoon to surprise them!

Attached is a photo of Prem when they first met him, under the tree. Also attached is a photo of Prem in his new wheelchair.

A wrong turn, and a life was changed - forever!

God bless,
